The Solid Rock

Psalms 40:2, “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”

On the Rock there can be no sinking. The sinking is in the mire of the horrible dark pit of sin. Through faith in Christ, the Rock of our salvation, we have found a solid foundation. However in he storms of life, in the feebleness of our faith, in the clouds of Satanic assaults and in the stumbles of our walk we sometimes fear our salvation is in doubt. Our feelings of safety ebb and flow. Like David some even say “I shall one day perish at the hands of Saul.” Like Peter we look at the storm and feel that the Rock upon which we stood has removed from beneath our feet. But Christ was still present to uphold the one who had desperate sinking feelings.

The truth is our safety does not depend on the frames of mind that we sometimes find ourselves in, that we sometimes even foolishly bring ourselves into. Even in our doubts and fears the Lord remains a faithful rock as Paul says, 2 Timothy 2:13, “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” Samuel Rutherford said, “Believe Christ’s love more than your own feeling. Your Rock doth not ebb and flow, though your sea doth.” This was good counsel, take it on board today.

Oft I walk beneath a cloud,
Dark as midnight's gloomy shroud;
But, when fear is at its height,
Jesus comes, and all is light;
Blessed Jesus, bid me show
Doubting saints how much I owe. (Robert Murray McCheyne)
