Philip Doddridge “O Happy Day”
2 Samuel 23:1-5 “Now these be the last words of David... Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.” On this day (26th October) 1751, Rev. Philip Doddridge died of tuberculosis. His famous book ‘The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul’ led William Wilberforce and others to Christ. He authored over four hundred poems and hymns, including “O Happy Day.” These generally were summaries of his sermons intended to help his congregation. The original name Doddridge gave to “O Happy Day” was “Rejoicing in our Covenant Engagement with God.”
O happy day that fixed my choice
‘Tis done– the great transaction's done;
Now rest, my long divided heart,
High heav'n that hears the solemn vow,
As Doddridge was dying of his illness at the age of forty-nine, his wife saw his lips moving and asked if he needed anything. “No,” he replied, “I am only renewing my covenant engagements with God.”
