Isaiah 54:5, “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”

The Christian is united to a Divine and heavenly Husband—even to God in Christ. The context in which God states this is one of the image of the desolation of widowhood. God understands the desolation and reproach of widowhood. He not only understands it—He has tender sympathy for it and comforts such with His promises. The widow is an object of His special regard. He fences the widow with tender care. Hear His word; “plead for the widow (Isaiah 1:17 ). “He relieveth the fatherless and widow” (Psalm 146:9). “He will establish the border of the widow” (Proverbs 15:25). You remember how it is said of the the Lord Jesus in Luke 21:2, “he saw also a certain poor widow.” If you have this lonely devastation or similar be assured He sees you too.

“God gives charge to others to take care of the fatherless and widow and will He neglect them Himself?” (Richard Sibbes).
