The Lord Tries the Righteous

Psalms 11:5, “The LORD trieth the righteous.”

That the Lord tries the righteous is most necessary. Necessary for a believers sanctification and for God’s glory. The furnace refines a believer. True ore must go into the fire to come out more pure. The Lord sits “as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness” (Mal. 3:3). God’s people are chosen “in the furnace of affliction” (Isaiah 48:10). Saints even pray for this, “Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart” (Psalm 26:2). There is the trial of faith, but also of our patience, obedience and of our work. Hard times and trying providences do not indicate the hatred of God but His love towards His people. God keeps, humbles, softens and purifies His saints in the fire. Tried Job bore this testimony, "God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me” (23:16). In all his trials Job was still much beloved.

“Ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you” (John 16:22).
