Psalms 42:6, “O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.”

Here we have disease and remedy, depression and cure. We don’t often admit to others our despondency, but it is something that we can bring to the Lord. In our lowest times, like the Lord on the cross, we should say, “My God, my God.” Downheartedness should not cause us to forget the Lord or to avoid Him, rather, like David it should drive us to Him. Note the word “therefore.” Depression is reason to remember the Lord. To remember the Lord’s kindness, to remember His promises, to remember His long suffering, to remember His death, to remember His works and help in times past.

We don’t imagine the great preacher Charles Spurgeon to be a man battling doubts and depression but yet he at times confessed it was so, as in the following words.

“I find myself frequently depressed – perhaps more so than any other person here. And I find no better cure for that depression than to trust in the Lord with all my heart, and seek to realize afresh the power of the peace-speaking blood of Jesus, and His infinite love in dying upon the cross to put away all my transgressions.” (Spurgeon).

“The ultimate cause of all spiritual depression is unbelief. For if it were not for unbelief even the devil could do nothing. It is because we listen to the devil instead of listening to God that we go down before him and fall before his attacks” (LloydJones).
