Christ or “dolls and rattles?”

Job 23:3, “Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!”

Job got it right! “Him” and “his seat” that was the priority. To be taken up with Christ is the wisest pursuit and the most commendable activity of the soul. As Paul said, “That I may know him” (Philippians 3:10). We are prone to get taken up with things much less, like children are taken up with toys and the parents are never considered. As Thomas brooks said, “The child is so absorbed with dolls and rattles, that the mother is not thought of. And such is the behavior of weak Christians towards Christ.” Job of course had everything taken from him and was in such a poor state of health that ‘toys’ had no more appeal for him. He was shut up to find his solace in God alone.

“The thoughts and hearts of weak Christians are more taken up with the good things they have from Christ—than with Christ Himself... Their thoughts and hearts are so exercised about these things—that Christ Himself is much neglected by them. Those who are strong in grace are more taken up with Christ Himself, than they are with His love-tokens. They bless Christ indeed for every grain of grace—but Christ Himself is more to them than all these. Christ is the most sparkling diamond in the ring of glory!” (Thomas brooks).
