Saints in Caves!

Hebrews 11:38, “Of whom the world was not worthy: they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.”

Caves are strange places for saints. Can it be that they who have become light in the Lord should find themselves in a dark place? This verse reminds us that they the worthy believers of old did not get life in this world easy. They had their dark times too. They had at times to flee and hide. Samson, David, Elijah, and prophets under the leadership of Obadiah were all forced to flee and hide in caves. Psalm 142 is a prayer of David when he was in such a cave. Such times in a dark place are not always bad for us. They are often places where we pray much more sincerely and earnestly. As Spurgeon said, “Caves make good closets for prayer; their gloom and solitude are helpful to the exercise of devotion.” Always remember that every cave has a bright light beyond; it is the light of God’s Word and promises.

“There is no cave so deep, so dark, but we may out of it send up our prayers, and our souls in prayer, to God.” (Matthew Henry).
