The soul known in adversities

Psalms 31:7, “I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities.”

Here David refers to his ‘trouble’ and ‘adversities.’ He also is aware of God’s presence because he views the Lord as one who considers and knows. He is assured the Lord sees all that he is going through. David does not only emphasise that the Lord sees the afflictions of His servant but that He also sees the soul response of David in adversity. We all adopt a certain temper in trials and the Lord knows what our attitude is. He sees what goes on in our hearts under trouble. He sees if the affliction humbles us and whether we are meek and submissive. He observes if we are impatient and even angry. He cares how we feel in our spirit. He sees if the soul cries out to Him. If the Lord observes our soul in adversity then we should also observe and guard our hearts at such a time. We should ensure the Lord sees a soul meekly and humbly looking to Him at such times.

"Man, know thyself,” is a good philosophic precept, but "Man, thou art known of God," is a superlative consolation.” (Spurgeon)
