“Such a one” as Charles Simeon
Luke 18:13, “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” On this day, 13th November (in 1836) the evangelical minister Charles Simeon lay dying. It was a Lord’s Day and he ought to have preached that morning in Great St Mary’s church. He breathed his last as the bells of the church called the worshippers to come. Shortly before he passed away he raised his hand and slowly three times smote upon his chest and spoke these words:
“I am, I know, the chief of sinners; and I hope for nothing but the mercy of God in Christ Jesus to life eternal; and I shall be, if not the greatest monument of God’s mercy in heaven, yet the very next to it; for I know none greater . . . I look, as the chief of sinners, for the mercy of God in Christ Jesus to life eternal, and I lie adoring the sovereignty of God in choosing such a one—and the mercy of God in pardoning such a one—and the patience of God in bearing with such a one—and the faithfulness of God in perfecting his work and performing all his promises to such a one.”
“No man ever miscarried for being a great sinner; but only for being an impenitent sinner” (William Spurstowe 1605-1666).
