The Fingers of Jesus

Mark 7:33, “And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue.”

John 8:6, “This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.”

These are the only two occasions that we read about the fingers of the Saviour. Both occasions the context of hearing is referred to. In the first there is a deaf man who can’t hear. In the second the Lord acts as if He does not hear. In both He communicated by means of the finger. To the deaf man He communicated the truth that He was the one opening his deaf ears and piercing through to break the silence. To the self righteous He with the finger communicated an unrevealed text that sent them all scurrying. This is the only time that we read of the Lord writing. The Lord’s finger shows us that it is His office and work to make us hear. In the one to cause those to hear who want to hear. In the other, even to cause those to hear who don’t want to hear the truth.

Are we hungry to hear God’s word? The Lord will pierce our ears and send His truth into our souls. Are we deaf to some truths and even stubbornly wish to remain so? The Lord will surely humble us and point out the text.

“He put his fingers into his ears, as if he would syringe them, and fetch out that which stopped them up” (Matthew Henry).
