Luther and the Little Bird

Psalms 27:5, “For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.”

God’s people are as liable to become anxious as much as those who have no faith in Christ. It was in the context of worry and fear that the Lord said we ought to consider the birds. “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” (Matthew 6:26). The little birds, especially at night, behave as if they have God for their sanctuary.

On this Reformation day it is good to think of Martin Luther and his faith. He proved Psalm 27:5 many times. He was a man of faith who had a gifted ability to be able to read the lessons of nature. One evening he was standing looking out his window and he observed a small solitary bird settling down for the night. He had not yet built his nest and Luther said, “Look how that little fellow preaches faith to us all. He has chosen his shelter. He calmly takes hold of his tiny twig, tucks his head under his wing, rocks himself to sleep without a care and leaves God to think for him.”

“Birds sing on a bare bough; O, believer, canst not thou?” (C. H. Spurgeon).

“Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22).
