Made peaceable by devouring a book!

Psalm 119:165, “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”

The missionary to Africa Robert Moffat told an amusing story of a native who lived near one of the missionary settlements. He arrived distressed one day at the home of the missionaries. The poor man related how his dog had obtained the copy of the New Testament that the missionaries had given him, ripped it asunder and devoured it. God’s servants tried to calm him by promising him another copy. However, this did not seem to comfort the man. Then he proceeded to relate how that his dog was a useful guard of his property and a vicious hunter of wild beasts and that now he feared he would be the opposite, full of love and gentleness like the words of “that book.” Made peaceable by devouring a book! We laugh at the simplicity of that poor ignorant man, but he knew this much, that the Bible forbids hatred and strife and calls men to be gentle like Jesus Christ.

Pity, forbearance, long-sufferance, fair interpretation, excusing our brother, and taking in the best sense, and passing the gentlest sentence, are certainly our duty; and he that does not so is an unjust person” (Jeremy Taylor 1613-1667).
