Not so much the job as the work!

Ephesians 6:8, “Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.”

The principal as stated here is a general one. But the context of this statement is Paul’s address to slaves. In the world then, a slave was the lowest station in society. But to God the outward station and position of a man in society matters not. Whether pauper or prince, a man’s labour is judged not according to how one perceives the grandeur of the job. The judgement is according to the uprightness of a man in his job. Honest and good work wrought in any lawful labour will be accepted by the Lord as service rendered to Himself. Slaves could become discouraged in serving their ungrateful masters, but Paul would assure them that God notices their efforts and that as their heavenly Master He will reward them. Therefore, “whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24).

“The world is wont to set little value on the labours of slaves; but God esteems them as highly as the duties of kings” (John Calvin).
