Luther’s “Pauline Psalms”

Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered” (Romans 4:7).

The words, Paul reminds us, are from the prophetic lips of David. They are from Psalm 32. Martin Luther loved all the Psalms and his flock knew he had many favourites but one day he was pressed to state which Psalms were the best. "Psalmi Paulini," he answered and then he went on to number them; "The 32nd, the 51st, the 130th, and the 143rd. For they all teach that the forgiveness of our sins comes, without the law and without works, to the man who believes, and therefore I call them Pauline Psalms.”

The covering of sin apart from the blood of Jesus Christ will prove a curse. But that man is truly blessed who in believing has the covering that the gracious Redeemer provides.

"He that hath got a view of Christ, and reads his own pardon in Christ's sufferings, can rejoice in this in the midst of all other sufferings, and look on death without apprehension, yea with gladness, — for the sting is out, Christ hath made all pleasant to him by this one thing, that He suffered once for sins. Christ hath perfumed the cross and the grave, and made all sweet. The pardoned man finds himself light, skips, and leaps, and through Christ strengthening him can encounter any troubles, yea he can submit patiently to the Lord in any correction. Thou hast forgiven my sin, therefore deal with me as thou wilt: all is well." (Archbishop Leighton 1611–1684).
