Cure of the Soul Has Primacy

“Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins” (Psalm 25:18)

David is in sore trials, afflicted and in pain as the text says. He asks the Lord for two things. The first thing is in regard to his heavy earthly, personal and perhaps bodily infirmities. The second thing is in regard to the load and weight of sin. In respect to the first he only desires the Lord’s attention and sympathy, content for Him to do as He pleases. He knows the Lord is kind and of tender mercies and if He but consider the pain, David knows He will do kindly. But for the load of sin, David is more specific and much more direct; David begs for a complete and full pardon. This teaches us that our sins are more serious than our troubles and that we should be more earnest to have them all removed than to have our trials removed. Begin first with your soul. Desire the cure of your soul more than the cure of your body.

“Sin is a plague, yes, the greatest and most infectious plague in the world; and yet, ah! how few are there that tremble at it, that keep at a distance from it!” (Thomas Brooks).
