Vanishing Things!

1 John 2:17, “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

Two messages today.
1. The world is passing away!
2. The believer will live forever!

There are two worlds, the world that now is and the world to come. This present world is a dying world, and here believers have no continuing city. Saints are just passing through a passing world.

There is an unseen world which does not pass away. It is eternal and glorious. “The Lamb is the light thereof." Nothing that defiles enters into it but only they that are washed in Christ’s blood. In that world the saint will everlastingly abide.

Passing onward, quickly passing,
But I ask thee, "Whither bound?
Is it to the many mansions
Where eternal rest is found?
Passing onward, passing onward,
Tell me, sinner, “whither bound?" Albert Midlane, 1825-1909

“An old minister — now two hundred years ago — lay dying. His fourscore years were well-near completed. He had been tossed on many a wave, from England to America, from America to England, again from England to America. At Boston he lay dying, full of faith and love. The evening before his death, as he lay all but speechless, his daughter asked him how it was with him. He lifted up his dying hands, and with his dying lips simply said, "Vanishing things, vanishing things!" We repeat his solemn words, and, pointing to the world, with all the vanities on which vain man sets his heart, say, "Vanishing things!" (Horatius Bonar).
