The Fruit of Godly Fear

Proverbs 19:23, “The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.”

There are benefits in fearing the Lord and living and doing right in His sight. Three fruits are here described. Life, satisfaction and security. Fearing God tends to physical, mental, but especially spiritual life. “The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened” (10:27).

“The best way to come to "a good old age", is the fear of God” (Thomas Watson).

Godliness tends to keep us comforted and content. It keeps peace in the conscience. It puts us on the path of safety and keeps us out of the way of much that is harmful. Many a life has been shortened, and many a heart has been made sad, and much hurt has been received simply because the individual did not heed God’s Word.

We read in Acts 9:31 how the early church benefited by walking in the fear of God. “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.”

“Such as are destitute of God's fear, never meet with satisfaction” (Thomas Watson).
