What a Good Word Can Do

Proverbs 12:25, “Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.”

The two on the road to Emmaus experienced a heaviness similar to that which is described in the text. Their hearts were bowed down with sadness and their dejection was evident in the conversation which the Lord overheard. “He said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?” (Luke 24:17).

It is so blessed to know that when our path is sad the Lord draws near. He listens for a time, but then He soon begins to speak. When the Lord speaks, what a difference it makes! He knows how to give a word in season to His weary ones.

Later, the two testified, “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” That “good word” not only made their drooping hearts glad, it turned them around and put them on a path to bring rejoicing to others. A remarkable transformation and all because of “a good word.”

Heavy hearted one, look to the Lord and turn to the Scriptures, you will be sure to find a good word. Taste “the good word of God” (Hebrews 6:5). When you do receive a reviving word, share it with others. That’s how revival spreads.

“The word of a brother, pronounced from Holy Scripture in a time of need, carries an inconceivable weight with it. The Holy Spirit accompanies it, and by it moves and animates the hearts of His people, as their circumstances require” (Martin Luther).
