Proverbs 13:20, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” The emphasis here is on the words, ‘walking with’ and ‘companion of.’ We cannot avoid working with unconverted and we must do business with all kinds of people. In our contact with our fellow men we must always be courteous and kind. But Christians ought not to have intimate friendship with the ungodly. To walk with and be companion of those who have no love for God is not wise. One simple reason for this is that it is dangerous to the soul. Company has an effect on our character. An old proverb says, "Tell me with whom a man chooses to live, and I will tell you what he is."
It is also true that the fellowship of good company is beneficial. Christians then must seek out Christian fellowship. We must walk with and be companions of good people.
If we are readers of books, then in a sense we make authors our friends. This is why we must also be careful what we read. The best friends of all are the Apostles and Prophets. In the Bible we have the inspired counsel of good and wise men.
Luke 16:29-31, “Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.... If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”
Luke 24:27, “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
If we walk with our Bible and keep the company of the Apostles and Prophets we will not only be kept safe, but also, we will become very wise.
“If friends will not walk in the narrow way with us, we must not walk in the broad way to please them. But let us distinctly understand that to attempt to keep up close intimacy between a converted and an unconverted person, if both are consistent with their natures, is to attempt an impossibility” ( Bishop Ryle).
"Let those be thy choicest companions who have made Christ their chief companion" (Thomas Brooks).
