A Broken Heart

Psalm 34:18, “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

There are two things that can break our heart and keep us humble.

The first is God’s Word; “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29). What the heavy hammer struck on a rock by a mighty hand would do, so does God’s Word when it falls on the human heart by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The other thing is affliction. The suffering Psalmist said, (Psalm 69:20), “Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.” Read the whole Psalm and you will see those are the words of one made truly contrite.

“God Almighty has two houses in which he dwells: his city-house, and his country-house. His city-house is the heaven of heavens; and his country-house is the humble and lowly heart! Isaiah 57:15, "I dwell in the high and holy place," that is, in heaven, God's city-house; "and also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit," that is his country house. Humility is a 'Bethel' for God's dwelling-place! Pride is a 'Babel' for the devil's residence” (William Dyer 1632-1696).
