What’s in Your Bosom?

Ecclesiastes 7:9, “Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.”

Anger may pass through a good man’s heart, but it should never rest there. The bosom ought to be the seat of love. A man’s wife is the wife of his bosom, Deuteronomy 13:6. It is the place where a beloved child or grandchild is taken to, Ruth 4:6. In heaven Lazarus flew to Abraham’s bosom to feel what he never felt on earth.

Christ is in the bosom of the Father for we read, “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him” (John 1:18).

The sensitive John, knew what the bosom of his dear Lord was like, for he wrote, “Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23). In Christ’s bosom, love not only rests, it saturates His heart. “He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young” (Isaiah 40:11).

Anger is like a storm that blows away the better feelings in a saint. The breezes of the Holy Spirit are of another nature altogether. Don’t take the terrible destructive fire of anger into your bosom child of God, it will bring you ruin. “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?” (Proverbs 6:27). Rather, let the Holy Spirit shed abroad in it the fire of Divine love. Oh that Christ alone may dwell and rest in our bosoms by faith, Ephesians 3:17.

“Is it any merit to abstain from wine if one is intoxicated with anger?“ Augustine.
