Rivers of Water

“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified) John 7:38-39.

One of the emblems of the Holy Spirit is water. That is why He is often depicted as being poured out as waters are poured forth. In the text the Lord compares the Holy Spirit to the waters of a river. What the waters of a river are to a land, that the Holy Spirit is within a man. Waters cleanse and purify, they soften and refresh, they bring fertility and life to the soil. Waters cool. Our hearts need all these things. What a hard, barren, impure and dead place the human heart is without the Spirit of God! He alone can soften us. He alone can remove the unholy heated passions. He alone can bring purity. He alone can revive and refresh us.

When the rivers of the Spirit come into the heart, “ the wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the LORD, and the excellency of our God” (Isaiah 35:1-2).

Isaiah 32:15, “Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.”

“Whereas, before, the heart of a sinner was unclean and whatever he touched had a tincture of impurity, when once the Spirit comes into the heart with His continual showers, He washes off the filthiness of it, making it pure and fit for God to dwell in” (Thomas Watson 1620-1686).
