Song of Songs 3:8, “They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.”

This verse, while about the 60 bodyguards of King Solomon, may have spiritual application to all those who follow the Lord. It is certainly true that no Christian is to be unarmed. “They all,” not one exception, “hold swords.” Every saint is to have his sword upon his thigh, even “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). Paul says we are to “take” that sword. Of the saints it is commanded, “Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand” (Psalm 149:6).

Our Captain provided us an example in that matter. When He was driven into the wilderness, He didn’t go without the sword of the word. It was at hand to combat Satan, (see Matthew 4:1-10). He was expert in the spiritual warfare. We face the same Satan, and we must imitate our Captain. We have to gain the expertise and properly apply the appropriate thrust, “it is written.”

The reason for being girded with our spiritual weapon is stated in the text, it is “because of fear in the night.” Our pilgrimage is in the nighttime of this world, and there are the dangers of this age, therefore the sword is at the ready upon the thigh.

Recall Pilgrim’s fight with Apollyon in Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress.”

“Then Apollyon, espying his opportunity, began to gather up close to Christian, and wrestling with him, gave him a dreadful fall; and with that Christian's sword flew out of his hand. Then said Apollyon, I am sure of thee now: and with that he had almost pressed him to death, so that Christian began to despair of life. But, as God would have it, while Apollyon was fetching his last blow, thereby to make a full end of this good man, Christian nimbly reached out his hand for his sword, and caught it, saying, Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise, (Mic. 7:8); and with that gave him a deadly thrust, which made him give back, as one that had received his mortal wound. Christian perceiving that, made at him again, saying, Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through Him that loved us. (Rom. 8:37). And with that Apollyon spread forth his dragon wings, and sped him away, that Christian saw him no more. (James 4:7).” (John Bunyan 1628-1688).
