“ Better to put the ax at the root of the issue ”
God’s revelation to mankind comes punctuated with extra ‘signs and wonders’ that introduce important stages.
For instance, the giving of the law was accompanied with a spectacular display of lightning and thunder at Sinai never to be repeated, God’s Son coming into this world was backed by the heavenly praising host and a guiding star, while the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the church was marked by tongues of fire.
However, in our feebleness, we become fascinated with the secondary to the point of missing the main thing.
For instance, we would have considered it improper if Israel had enacted a yearly celebration of the spectacular display at Sinai instead of practising its teachings, yet every year thousands are taken with the angels, the shepherds and the wise men--the secondary features of the Christmas season—as points of commemoration, missing out how such are only the staging points God chose when introducing His Son into this world. |
