The Lord encounters a woman caught in adultery. This is not fiction. It is a real person that encounters a real Savior. The Bible is a book of real history. We have seen a variety of encounters (fishermen, a religious ruler, a Samaritan woman). The background of the people vary but they all come to the same conclusion that Jesus is the Savior of sinners and they all commit their souls unto him. What does this event show us? We see the Lord in his role as Judge.
1. The infallible standard for judgment There are many theories about what the Lord wrote. We don't know why he wrote or what he wrote. The action of writing convicts religious leaders. The Bible shows a number of places where God writes. In Exodus, we see tables of stone written with the finger of God. There is the hand that wrote of judgment in Daniel. There is law in scripture and the law written in our hearts (Rom 2:11,14). We have to remind this world of God's standards.
2. The inescapable scope of judgment Depravity affects us all and so also judgment
3. The intense scrutiny of the judgment Why did they all leave? The religious leaders could have been guilty of adultery. The Lord might be showing that they did not follow the right procedure. Where is the man who committed adultery? The Lord made them realize they were guilty of spiritual adultery. The text tells us they were convicted by their own conscience.
4. The invaluable statement in the judgment Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. She is not getting off on a technicality. She is not condemned because Christ has taken her condemnation (Rom 5:18-19, 8:1). We are seeing her conversion here and find hope for our adulterous hearts.
