In considering the subject of the infilling of the Holy Spirit a little more, these two texts go together.
One of them instructs us not to 'grieve' the Holy Spirit; the other instructs us not to 'quench' the Holy Spirit.
In considering them we want to consider the subject of losing the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
Both of these commands relate to the subject of the infilling of the Holy Spirit. They do not relate to the indwelling of the Spirit. Once truly indwelt by the Spirit a believer cannot lose that reality. The Lord will never undo that which He has already wrought within the heart and life of a sinner. God does not believe in divorce!
These two commands relate to the second topic we have been considering as part of the work and witness of the Holy Spirit.
We can grieve the Holy Spirit so that we lose the infilling of the Spirit. We can quench the Spirit so much that we lose His infilling. These are surely serious issues that ought to concern a true believer. Who of us would want to grieve or quench the Holy Spirit?
