The work of the Holy Spirit within the life of a believer can be considered in a twofold fashion: firstly, there is what we may call the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and secondly, there is the infilling of the Spirit.
There is a considerable difference between these two vital aspects of the Holy Spirit's work. We ought never to confuse or mix these two aspects.
In bringing a sinner to saving faith in and union with Christ, the Holy Spirit plays a most vital part. Without the work of the Spirit there can be no experience of salvation. His work is absolutely essential for conversion.
However, it is the work of the Holy Spirit indwelling the believer after conversion that we want to consider. Having convinced a sinner of their sin and misery, having regenerated them and having united them to the body of Christ, what does the Holy Spirit continue to do in our lives as believers? |
