SERMON INFO
The repeated shedding of blood was a pre-eminent feature of Old Testament religious practice. The first shedding of blood was by God Himself. He slew animals to make our first parents coats of skins, Gen 3:21. It was the Lord who initiated this practice.

Abel's sacrifice was accepted and Cain's rejected because of this very point. Abel came to God by a blood sacrifice and Cain did not.

Noah was commanded to take two each of unclean animals into the ark and seven each of clean animals. This uneven number of clean animals was to provide victims for that blood sacrifice that Noah offered to God upon exiting the ark: And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar, Gen 8:20.

We read of Abraham offering sacrifices unto the Lord. Building altars and shedding blood was a repeated feature of this man who is called the father of the faithful.

There could never be a sacrifice offered to God in the Tabernacle or Temple that did not include the shedding of blood. There were offerings that of themselves did not have any shed blood present. For example the meat/food offering outlined in Lev 2:1 usually consisted of fine flour, oil and frankincense with no leaven present. At special times it consisted of the firstfruits of the harvest seasoned with salt. But it could never offered on its own. It must always be accompanied by shed blood.

All these incidents demonstrate the importance of shed blood.
The shed blood:
1. Applied to provide protection - Exodus 12:23
2. Presented to give acceptance - cf Leviticus 16:15
3. Sprinkled to bring cleansing - cf. Numbers 19:1-10.
