Abner was the captain of Saul's host and the man responsible for implementing that campaign against the Lord's anointed. And not only that but when King Saul and his son Jonathan were killed by the Amalekites in a great battle Abner tried his hand at king making by trying to place King Saul's Son Ishbosheth on the throne in rivalry to David. He was determined to make sure that his old enemy would never be on the throne. He was strongly opposed as he could be to King David. But then we read of a remarkable change that took place in the life of this man. In chapter 3 we read of him suddenly giving up all his old hatred and opposition to David and he come to make a league with David. It says in chapter 3:12 And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee. He wanted to be on David's side. We might ask ourselves what had brought about such a mighty transformation. What made a man who fought against David all his life suddenly turn and want to be David's friend? This was a real turnaround. In many ways we would call it a conversion.
