Men are responsible to hear the word of God and then respond to it. True preaching demands a response from the hearers. True preaching aims at change. It demands people make the right response to the Word of God. It calls for a choice. We look at this choice in Joshua 24.
1. choice comes with an exhortation to obey (24:14)
The choice is brought to us in the form of a command. Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him. The word 'serve' has a focus on worship (Psalm 11:1-2). It summarizes what it is to be a true Christian. To offer our entire life for the good of God is our reasonable services (Roman 12:1). Choice is not simply a matter of preference. There is only one right choice to make. There are alternatives, life and death. But only one choice is right. So choose life.
2. choice comes with evidence to consider
The Lord God is giving evidence of all the things He has done (24:2-13). The evidence is such that it shuts us up to the conclusion that the Lord alone is God and we should serve him. We have more evidence than this. We have the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you choose to walk away from God, you are choosing to walk away from the evidence.
3. choice comes with an example to encourage us (24:15-18)
Joshua presents himself as an example to follow. As for me and my house, we will serve. If faith is vital to you, then it will be vital to be those around you. The father and mother have a tremendous role to play
4. choice comes with a cost to count (24:19-25)
Joshua is urging a choice with an understanding. It will not be easy to follow the Lord. But we must not look back
Have you made the choice this day to follow the Lord?
