One of the best books I've ever read is "The Gift Of Pain", the story of Dr. Paul Brand who did pioneering research on Hansen's Disease which revolutionized our understanding of it. Follow him from WWII to India to Carville, LA - which was once the only leper colony in the USA, but has closed because leprosy is now treated as an outpatient condition! Only the love of Christ could have reached out to these people and helped their condition. The book is especially meaningful for people with chronic painful conditions trying to understand their pain.
