The people of God were more interested in fixing up their own homes than in rebuilding the Temple. Why? They had grown insensitive to the Lord's presence in their midst and had become idol worshippers of their material possessions.
But the Lord assured them that He was still with them and wanted them to finish the project they let fall by the wayside some 15 years earlier.
This passage has many vital lessons to teach the Lord's people today. While the circumstances have changed, the insensitivity to God's presence and the idolatry has not. Yet the Lord still assures the Church, "I am with you."
