Rev. Stephen Hamilton
There can be little doubt that music is a powerful medium. Ths is recognised in the world at large - airports, restaurants, department stores, and even doctors' offices employ music to great effect. Advertisers have long understood how powerful the medium of music can be in promoting and selling their products - most commercials would be dull and uninteresting were it not for their musical accompaniment. Studies have been done by universities and other secular institutions into the benefits and draw-backs of certain types of music. This in itself is sufficient to debunk the idea that music is amoral, i.e. neither good or bad. Where music is concerned there is no neutral ground - it is by definition either good or evil, and therefore produces good or evil effects. Therefore, music in worship is a most important matter to be considered. Church music is by definition either good or bad - it is not amoral. God has quite a lot to say about worship and music, and the Bible contains direction for the Church in the matter. Someone once asked:"Why should the Devil have all the good music?" The truth is that he doesn't. In fact he is not interested in "good" music or anything else that is good. But, Satan does have his music. The trouble is that some professing Christians, and churches, are employing the Devil's music in what they are pleased to describe as "worship". CCM (a misnomer: Contemporary Christian Music) is indeed the Devil's Device.
